He woke up hurriedly at 7.30 AM. The alarm had been put to snooze over three
times. Ah! A little extra ten minutes of sleep would have made him feel better.
It was a Saturday morning. His little angel had been peacefully asleep. He
wanted to cuddle up next to the child and make clay toys until afternoon. He
barely got to spend time with her. He had late nights. She slept early. Adjusting
the tie around his neck and kissing his wife goodbye, he felt a part in him wishing
for some extra time with them.
As he drove to work, he heard the twenty percent extra offer played out
on the radio and laughed. It wasn’t about the added handful of cookies you
munched into or the additional half an hour of service you got. The word extra did
so many beautiful things, he wondered. The added handful was like a pat on your
back. The additional half an hour were like thirty minutes added to the twenty-four
hour clock. It was more about the feeling it generated, the boost you needed and
the appreciation that you so well deserved.
He was gripped by a strange sense of alienation, as he sat at his desk
and looked around at his co-workers. While everyone was lost in achieving their
targets, as always, he craved to steal an extra minute from their lives, and assure
them, that none of their efforts had ever gone in vain. The little extra that they
gave to the company each day, was like giving a valuable part of their lives to
make that extra little difference to the work they did.
He had a good feeling about this today. Like, the extra he deserved was
just around the corner. He let his instinct guide him forward. As the computer
booted and the browser opened up the search engine tab, he randomly typed the
word extra into it. He felt amused as he wished it were succeeded by the word
‘salary’. He scanned the screen, until the engine linked to a platform that blew
his mind off. He realized that his gut feeling, had led him into finding what he was
looking for. No longer would he feel a part of the fifty billion salaried herd, that
toiled from morning to evening, but had not a patch of grass to graze for
themselves. He curiously signed up and humbly waited for the confirmation mail.
This made him feel like a proud co-founder of a treasured community. For the
first time in months, his smile reached his eyes, as he allowed the feeling to sink
in. The feeling that he would no longer lead a life that didn’t acknowledge his
dedication or deal with hard work going unnoticed. No longer would he face
ignorance towards his commitments or simply wish for extras to fill his pocket
Life happens in those moments when you steal away something extra from
your mundane routine. An extra call to your love; an extra bonus for your
Walk that extra mile. There are wonderful encounters awaiting you.
